Aboriginal Community Initiatives

The Aboriginal Community Initiatives branch (ACI) helps Aboriginal communities in Alberta become safe and secure by assisting them with the development of their own safe-community action plans. These plans consist of crime and violence prevention as well as victim services initiatives.

ACI works closely with Alberta Justice and Alberta’s Safe Communities Secretariat in implementing the recommendations of the Crime Reduction and Safe Communities Task Force that affect Aboriginal people. ACI also works to promote Aboriginal youth leadership and to work with Aboriginal communities to address issues that impact women and elders.

Current initiatives include supporting the RCMP in building relationships with Aboriginal communities, supporting the development of the Alberta Gang Suppression Strategy and supporting the Aboriginal Justice Program.

ACI joined the Ministry of Aboriginal Relations in November 2008.  It was formerly known as the Aboriginal Justice Initiatives under the provincial Solicitor General and Public Security department.
