The Eight Metis Settlements

Eight Settlements were established by the Metis Settlements Act.

Each settlement is governed by a five-person council, which are:

  • are elected by the membership and headed by a Chair selected by the Council members;
  • make bylaws on matters of local governance. Bylaws may not contravene any provincial law or MSGC Policy and must be approved by the Settlement membership;
  • are responsible for their Settlement's membership and land allocations; and
  • administer and deliver programs and services for their membership.

Membership requirements for the settlements are set out in the Metis Settlements Act.
