Friendship Centres

Alberta is home to a large urban Aboriginal population. According to the 2006 census, sixty-three percent of Aboriginal people in Alberta live in major urban areas. The province is projected to have the second-largest urban Aboriginal population by 2017.

Indigenous Relations provides funding support to the 20 Alberta Friendship Centres through the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association (ANFCA) . This helps support health, employment, housing, recreation, and cultural programs for Aboriginal people in urban centres.

The Ministry also works with the ANFCA to develop capacity building initiatives to improve local Friendship Centre organizational and management effectiveness.  This partnership has resulted in Friendship Centres undertaking business planning, annual reports, staff development/training and financial management.
